10 Actions to Support Women in STEM and Trades

  1. ​Link with schools, TAFEs and universities to raise female students’ awareness of STEM and trades training and careers, including the opportunities and benefits.
  2. Showcase the STEM and trades careers available in your organisation to girls and women who are connected to your workforce, through workplace-based career exploration opportunities such as a ‘Bring your daughter to work’ program.
  3. Partner with organisations that promote and support girls and women to pursue STEM and trades training and careers.
  4. Support networking, mentoring and leadership opportunities for women in STEM fields and trades in your organisation and industry.
  5. Publish and promote profiles of women working in STEM fields and trades in your organisation and industry.
  6. Address unconscious bias by:
    • demystifying the sort of work women can do and women’s interest in and capacity for traditionally male-dominated roles
    • using inclusive language and diverse images and voices in recruitment and other organisational resources.
  7. Implement flexible, inclusive and family-friendly workplace policies and practices.
  8. Provide a physical environment for training and working that accommodates women and men.
  9. Engage female apprentices, trainees and graduates in STEM fields and trades.
  10. Employ women in STEM fields and trades.
