The $135,000 grant was presented to Advocare CEO Greg Mahney at an event on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (15 June 2015).
The Elder Abuse Helpline was established in September 2014 by Advocare and is funded primarily by the Department of Local Government and Communities to provide support to seniors who have experienced elder abuse, or who may be at risk of it.
Elder abuse is the mistreatment of older people by their own relatives or friends. Mistreatment includes financial, physical, emotional and psychological abuse.
The Department of Local Government and Communities works to reduce elder abuse in WA through the provision of various information designed to support individuals and service providers.
