Legislation recognising Perth's status as the capital of Western Australia has been passed by both houses of WA Parliament.

Under the legislation, the boundaries of the City of Perth will be enlarged to include The University of Western Australia, Kings Park, Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre and the new Perth Children's Hospital.  The new boundaries will come into effect on 1 July 2016.

The City of Perth bill recognises the unique role of the City of Perth, outlining the responsibilities that should guide the council's actions and decision making.

The bill also amends the Local Government Act 1995 to provide for greater transparency and accountability of local government elected members and senior staff by requiring them to disclose gifts and contributions to travel within 10 days of receipt. Disclosures will be posted on the local government's website.
