The Department of Communities (Communities) is hosting an interactive booth at the SkillsWest Careers Expo (17 – 19 August). The booth will focus on women and girls exploring education and career pathways in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and trades.

STEM and trades industries have higher male participation rates; with women making up only 16 per cent of STEM professionals across Australia.

As globalisation and technological advancement changes the way we work, women with STEM skills can take advantage of a wide range of job opportunities and be at the frontier of job creation.

The Communities booth will have information and advice on how to get into rewarding STEM and trade careers, plus brochures on careers at Communities and our graduate program.

Communities is partnering with Robogals Perth, TradeUp Australia and KineticIT at the event to provide activities and showcase what women can do in STEM and trades.

Robogals Perth, a student volunteer-run organisation, will be introducing visitors to robotics and present a talk on stage about the value of gender diversity in STEM on Saturday.

TradeUp Australia will let you try-a-trade at one of their two workbenches where women from different trade careers will be on hand to share their experiences.

KineticIT will have 3D printer demonstrations and a career wheel you can use to find out which career may best suit you.

More than 8,000 people are expected to attend this free careers expo at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Communities has been participating since 2014.

Communities supports many initiatives, like Techtrails, which aim to improve the economic independence of women and broaden their career opportunities. To find out more, visit our Women in STEM and Trades page.
